MUST WATCH: What most schools don’t teach  **Motivation!**

“Great Coders are today’s rock stars.” ~ Will.i.Am (

I love what Mark Zuckerberg says at 0:50 -

“This started as me wanting to do something fun for myself.  It didn’t start as me wanting to master coding or computer science.”

Amen! That’s how your passion truly starts!  You become truly enthralled by something b/c you truly enjoy it, you love it.  Not because you want to get a job in it, not b/c of the money.  Sooo true!

Drew, creator of Dropbox, also drops a gem:

“It starts out being intimidating, but, you get the hang of it over time.”

The biggest step in achieving any type of success is just taking that first leap of faith & STARTING!  SOoOo many people simply don’t attain their true dreams b/c they don’t even get started on that path out of fear.  Don’t be that person.  As Drew states, it looks scary at first but with time, practice, & fortitude, you will achieve it!  Many times, those who succeed do so not b/c they were necessarily that much greater than the competition; they do so b/c they refused to quit whilst their competition did give up.

All the greats are self-taught. Because of raw inspiration and desire. They haven’t got time for you because they’re so busy pursuing their dream. ~Lefsetz

BTW, I’m soOoO not a techie by any means lol.  But, I agree 110% that coding is the future in every arena, industry.  The future of music is in EDM.  Look at any of the top DJs from Daft Punk to DeadMau5 to the young prodigys like Madeon.  All of them are tech wizards.  Even I, as a songwriter, am having to learn tech b/c it’ll increase my value, skills, efficiency, & effectiveness as an artist by knowing such programs as Logic, Pro Tools, & Ableton.  And, if I’m wanting to DJ, I’m now on course to learn Traktor too.  So, it all comes back down to technology.

Lefsetz touches on this point in his most current post:

That’s what’s being missed in all the coverage of entertainment and sports. The smart revolution. The point is made if you want a job in entertainment and sports today, never mind tomorrow, you’d better know how to code. Because these are data-driven enterprises.

So, go out there & chase your dream.  Now more than ever, thanks to technology, access to the higher realms of success is at our finger tips!

QUICK THOUGHTS: The Tech Realm & Its Growing Political Influence

As Im reading these articles on the new attack by Anonymous & the suicide of hacker/Reddit programmer Aaron Swartz, I realized that musicians as a whole are no longer the true political movers n’ shakers of this era sadly. It’s all the tech people who r truly makin a difference. The wikileaks founder Julia Assange being prosecuted immensely; the major internet companies like Google & FB combining their powers to ensure SOPA & PIPA didn’t get passed. The outcasts, the rebels r now in tech while those seeking only fame seem to wanna be a DJ/Rapper/artist/etc. :/

Business Matters: How Facebook Search Could Provide Cheap Market Research for Music Marketers

Via Billboard.biz:

Graph Search, or Facebook Search as it is likely to become known, is a tool for finding information about places and friends through Facebook’s 1 trillion connections between people, places and things. It could disrupt location services like Yelp, whose stock tumbled as much as 8.6% over Tuesday and Wednesday following the debut of Graph Search, but doesn’t have much overlap with the information indexed by Google.

But Graph Search could end up being a fairly useful tool for music marketers to get a general sense of the likes and interests of a particular group of fans. As the Inside Facebook blog points out, the search tool provides an opportunity for businesses to conduct market research about specific groups of fans for free.

Here’s an example: You could search for “Bands liked by people who like Bruno Mars.” That might not be very helpful to marketers or executives trying to secure specific brand partnerships, but it would be very helpful to search for Bruno Mars fans that like certain consumer product brands, wireless carriers and alcoholic beverage companies (all are the types of companies to sponsor tours). Or the search could look for followers of a particular activity or interest. Graph Search will even narrow the search results down to specific cities (and, one would assume, countries).

Facebook’s Ben Barry On How To Hack Your Job (Must Read Article!)

Read the whole article here.  My fave excerpts:

***What do you think is key to moving ahead in a creative field?***

Something that is often overlooked with creatives is time management and getting shit done. You can be the most talented designer in the world but if you don’t follow through and get stuff out there, it doesn’t matter.

I have several friends that are incredibly talented. They will start on projects but rarely follow through. They get bored or distracted or discouraged that it’s not “perfect” and give up. Following through and finishing things is one of the most important things you can learn.

One of my favorite quotes is “Done is better than perfect.” That doesn’t mean making crap – I believe you should always strive for the highest quality you can – but you have to finish. I think a lot of my friends in this situation don’t realize how in-demand their skills are. I think if you follow through on projects and just put the tiniest little effort into promoting yourself and have the tiniest bit of self-confidence, you can get the job you want.

***What soft skills do people often underestimate?***

Pitching and presenting your work well. It’s something I see all the time as students and I probably did as a student myself – making excuses. But fortunately I had a professor who said, “You never make excuses for poor work.” You just never go into a meeting saying, “Well, if I had more time or this isn’t very good…” No. Even if you’re thinking those things, you sell it and don’t ever make excuses. [Laughs] The other thing of course is never show anything you don’t want to have produced. I try to live by that.

***How do you breakout and answer that calling then?***

You have to make those opportunities happen and take those risks. I’ve always said that if what I’m doing isn’t resonating with where I am, it’s better for me to go somewhere else where it does. So, if you want to get into a certain type of work, you just have to do it on your own terms so that people will then pay you to do it.

***Do you ever struggle with self-doubt?***

Definitely. One of the benefits of having all these great design books and online resources around me is they really inspire me and other times it’s like “Fuck. I’m never going to be that good.” It can be really easy to fall into that trap and stop making things, but you just have to realize that everyone who is successful has made plenty of mistakes along the way.

I have always had this view of the world that everybody has access to the same resources I do and if these people can do it, I can do it, too. I recently came across this video after Steve Jobs passed away. It resonated with me a lot.

***What advice do you have for people starting out?***

When you come out of school you have to convince people that you have good ideas so they will give you money to do stuff. A big part of this is knowing your own weaknesses and then identifying and partnering with people that can help you accomplish your goals.

Facebook Looks to the Future: New Details on FB Music 'Dashboard' Emerge

I wonder if they’re also going to work with Grooveshark since numerous people here in the states use it.  Nonetheless, this is a noteworthy move by Facebook.  Check the full article here & some details below:

- In the left-hand column, where Facebook lists Photos, Friends, Places, Groups, Deals, Pages, and Games, you will find a new tab called Music. This tab will show up if a user has listened to music with one of Facebook’s partner music services.

- Clicking on this new tab will open a page called Music Dashboard.

- The Persistent Playback/Pause Button at the bottom of the Facebook page, where the “chat” icon is currently located, is like a quick snapshot and controller of the music experience. Mouse over it and you can see what is playing on whatever service you might be logged into using Facebook Connect. It also allows you to play or pause a track once you discover it on Facebook. It is also linked to the play buttons in the news feed.

- A page with snapshot of all the songs you have listened to on any specific service, and also your top tracks and the number of times you have listened to those tracks.

The Music Dashboard will have the following features:

1. Music Notifications: here you have notifications that show if your friends have listened to songs recommended by you or on your profile.

2. Recommended Songs: You can get a list of songs heard and recommended by your friends. You can also play them back by clicking the play icon.

3. Top Songs from friends.

4. Top Albums from friends, with cover art.

5. Recent listens from your friends.

6. In the upper-right corner there will be a “happening now” ticker that shows what is happening in your social and musical universe, including songs that your friends are playing. There is some talk that this “Happening Now ticker” would show-up all throughout your music experience and not just on the music dashboard.

Facebook Launching Music Service With Spotify: Report

ISH knows…this bodes really well for Spotify’s presence & future success in the online streaming game.  Linking up w/ the most powerful social networking site is always a positive move.  I think this will also help them in hopefully getting their site/program to finally launch here in the states.  Especially since it will be a smooth transition onto the FB website that will make it easy for people to use & likely increase people’s desire to want to use it:

Facebook will place a Spotify icon in their news feed that will download the service’s software to users computers upon selecting. Once loaded, it will allow Facebook users to stream music with their friends, simultaneously, via Facebook, according to the story.
