So, in case you didn’t know, Jay-Z wore a shirt over the weekend in support of the #OccupyTogether movement that said “Occupy All Streets.” Dope initiative; dope to see him support. BUT, the shirts then went online FOR SALE; FOR PROFIT. No biggie right? Given the fact that Jay-Z’s gone on the record supporting the movement, one would assume that at least some portions of the profits are going to support the movement. WRONG! The shirts initially were taken off the RocaWear online store after facing harsh criticism (which was completely justified). However, the shirts were back up and available for purchase this past Monday for $22. The company is making no apologies for this, and, plans to move forward from now on shipping them out by mid December. Full story here and here.
Hova has lost all my respect w/ this BS ass move. At least most of the 1% had the balls to say upfront that they don’t give a shit about those struggling; that they’re all about increasing their income. Jay-Z is the epitome of a coward, scumbag, and hypocrite. This guy has gone on the record supporting to support the movement but then manipulates it in a way for him to profit. “When the grass is cut, the snakes will show.” Well, thank you Mr. Carter for showing us the coward you truly are. You’re mad disappionting with this move b/c you act like you care, you come into our homes, we support your whole career, then, you flip around and leach off your community. I guess some things don’t change. I guess you are the same goon from the Marcy Projects who only cared about survival, the hustle, and making that cash money.
And, yes, I’m well aware of his philanthropic endeavors. I know the stories of how his 9/11 concerts’ profits all went to help 9/11 victims. But, does giving money here & there excuse hypocrisy and greed in other cases? Maybe I was just raised differently to be a man of my word, dignity, and respect 24/7 irrespective of the circumstances around me.
Some will argue, “There is nothing wrong with this. Jay’s always been a businessman. He’s always been about making money.” True. But, then, why voice your support for a movement you obviously don’t truly believe in? Actions speak louder than words; this shirt profiteering clearly connotes he only cares about making money. I don’t agree with that, but, I’ll tell you one thing: I’d have more respect for the man if he wasn’t such a fake and made it known he didn’t support the movement. But, as a businessman, he knew that’d be a bad business move because his fans are the 99%. How could he come out bluntly stating, “Well actually, um, I only care about my cheese.” Fake ass dude. SMFH.
I won’t even get started on Russell Simmons either with his credit card that only serves to keep the poor in debt even worse smfh.
